The Success Initiative at Odle in 2012 - 2013
Across the United States in general, and at Odle Middle School specifically, some students are not as successful as they could be. They earn D and F grades. They turn in work far below the level of which they are capable. They have poor attendance. They earn disciplinary consequences large and small. They are tardy. They are not motivated to put in effort towards their schoolwork or towards learning in general.
Some of these students display these characteristics year after year after year. And we let them.
What if we didn’t? What if we made it nearly impossible to earn D or F grades? What if we demanded that students put forth their best efforts? What if we gave them extra instruction when needed and we let them re-do work until it reaches a certain standard? What if we held them accountable for doing so? What if we rewarded them for their effort? What if we relentlessly improved the instruction we gave children in all our classes? What if we sincerely believed that every student at Odle Middle School is capable of achieving at high levels and we instilled that belief in themselves?
These questions form the basis of The Success Initiative at Odle.
The Success Initiative at Odle is comprised of several separate but interrelated and inter-supported programs and ideas:
- Extended Learning Time
- Accountability
- Positive Rewards
- Grading Systems
- Advisory/Homeroom
