Newport Student Published in College Engineering Newsletter for Nanotechnology

Congratulations to Newport High School sophomore Shrey Aeron for being published in the September 2017 edition of the NANOWIRE newsletter, produced by RAIN (Remote Access Instruments for Nanotechnology) and affiliated with Penn State’s College of Engineering.

Last year Aeron was a student in Newport’s Nano Technology CTE class taught by Melissa Baker.  In his article, Aeron described his experience in Baker’s class, including controlling a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) remotely to inspect strands of hair to solve a ‘whodunnit’ case.

BSD Teacher Helps Set National Standards for Accomplished Teaching

Newport High School teacher Helene Tate recently joined 271 of the most accomplished teachers from across the country in Chicago, IL to help set the National Board Certification performance standards across 25 certificate areas. Tate collaborated with other National Board Certified Teachers in groups according to their National Board certificate area/specialty to help set the performance standards for accomplished teaching.

About the experience, Tate said, “Working with teachers from across the nation to set these Standards for National Boards was not only enjoyable, but one of the most valuable professional development experiences I have had.”

National Board Certification is the teaching profession’s mark of accomplished practice. The more than 112,000 teachers who have achieved Board certification demonstrate their ability to teach to profession’s highest standards.
