Dear Tyee Families,
We are so excited to welcome our students to school on Tuesday. The first day of school is a time of great excitement as students connect with old friends, begin fostering new relationships, and are introduced to their teachers and the year of learning ahead. On Tuesday, we will begin distributing students’ schedules at 8:00 am. First period will begin at 8:30 am. All students should pick up a schedule on the first day of school.
One of my favorite scenes at Tyee on the first day of school is our 8th grade “WEB” leaders helping our 6th graders to open their lockers, to find a classroom, and to begin the process of mentoring them through their transition to middle school. It was not long ago that these 8th graders were apprehensive 6th graders. It’s a scene that illustrates the amazing growth that occurs in middle school and the spirit of community and leadership that we see from our students each day at Tyee.
For our families who are new to the Bellevue School District, there will be a New Parent Orientation on September 11th at 7:00 pm in the Tyee library. This year’s Curriculum Night for all Tyee families will be on September 30th. Curriculum Night will begin in the gymnasium at 6:30 pm followed by an opportunity for you to meet each of your student’s teachers, who will provide an overview of each course’s content, explain expectations for students’ learning and behavior, and discuss the best ways for you to support your student and communicate with the teachers. The evening will conclude at 9:00 pm. I hope you are able to attend this important event.
The PTSA’s Annual Classroom Bucks Fundraiser is also on September 30th during Curriculum Night. Contributions to this fundraiser enable the PTSA to support our 6th Grade Camp Orkila Program and a variety of grants for teachers to enhance classroom learning using iPad minis, musical instruments, microscopes, and a variety of other supplies and activities which will be explained at Curriculum Night.
On October 23rd at 5:30 pm, Tyee will be hosting its second Community Café Dialogues, an evening of interactive conversation where families can share experiences, stories, and perspectives on supporting a student at Tyee.
Finally, there be a Welcome Back Coffee at 8:30 am on Tuesday morning in the library. Mechelle Cheng, Tyee PTSA President, and I will introduce ourselves and explain opportunities for parent engagement at Tyee. A strong partnership between the school and the parent community is a hallmark of all great schools, and I look forward to continuing to strengthen our partnership over the course of the school year.
Best wishes for a great school year.
