Principal’s Message:

Happy New Year!  I hope you all had a wonderful break and are ready to take on the rest of January.  It has truly been joy to have students back and watch them transition to their school routine.

Once again, I have been asked by community members to encourage our families who transport students to exercise caution and follow traffic laws within our neighborhoods.  Specifically, we need you to observe the speed limit in the neighborhood where Puesta Del Sol is located, just west of Tyee.  In addition, follow rules for driving in the roundabout to the northeast of Tyee.  Cars are cutting through it to drop students off causing a safety hazard.  Learn how to drive a roundabout here: https://www.wsdot.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2014/09/23/webRoundabout_Folio_Statewide_English_040615.pdf  Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

In honor of the new year

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something.

So that’s my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody’s ever made before. Don’t freeze, don’t stop, don’t worry that it isn’t good enough, or it isn’t perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.

Whatever it is you’re scared of doing, Do it.

Make your mistakes, next year and forever.”

Neil Gaiman

Warm Regards,

Susan Thomas

 Announcements:

Avoid surprises and check grades online.

Wondering how your student is doing in classes?  Be sure to check grades online.  Grades are updated regularly by teachers and our expectation is that parents are checking progress weekly via the online grade portal. With teachers seeing 140+ students each day the reality is that teachers are unable to provide individual updates on missed assignments and low test scores, and the online grade viewer is our primary method for communicating this information.  More information about grade checking can be found online at: https://bsd405.org/departments/district-technology/grades-attendance/

First semester ends January 26.

Aum Upadhyay, an 11th grader at Interlake High School who is a national award-winning science student, created a game called Buzz Bowl, a cool Jeopardy-style buzzer game to make learning science and math fun for 5th-8th graders. The last two Buzz Bowl events were a big success so we are organizing a third Buzz Bowl on Saturday, January 27th at Odle Middle School from 8:30am to 3:00pm.

Buzz Bowl is ideal for all 5th-8th graders interested in learning science and math. We welcome beginners, science whizzes and everyone in between. Teams will be formed and compete based on the kids’ level of knowledge.

Kids can register individually or as a team of 3 to 5 students:

Come join us on January 15th at Interlake High School for eduSTEM Girl’s Day! Three levies will be on the February 13, 2018 ballot: Educational & Operations Levy, Technology & Capital Projects Levy, and School Bus Levy. Passing these levies will allow us to maintain the high quality programs and services our students currently receive.
