Assistive Technology FAQ

Assistive Technology (AT) refers to any tool, device, or system that helps individuals with disabilities access learning, communication, and daily activities. AT can range from simple tools like pencil grips and visual schedules to more advanced technologies such as speech-generating devices or screen readers. The goal of AT is to remove barriers, allowing students to actively participate in their education and reach their full potential.

In Bellevue School District, the process for acquiring Assistive Technology (AT) begins with a referral or request from the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan team. This team, which includes educators, specialists, and the family, evaluates the student’s needs and considers whether AT would support access to the curriculum. For students with IEPs, the team is required to consider AT devices and services, and if they determine that AT is necessary for the student to access their educational environment, they will provide the appropriate tools and support.

IEP team members are encouraged to use the SETT framework to guide and document the consideration of Assistive Technology devices and services for their students. The SETT framework is a widely recognized model used in the field of special education to guide the process of selecting appropriate Assistive Technology (AT) for individuals with Disabilities (Indicators and Matrices - Quality Indicators for Assistive Technology Services (qiat.org)).

Assistive Technology tools or strategies are not selected solely based on the guidance of an AT specialist. It is recommended that the IEP team, which may include the AT specialist, use the SETT framework to ensure the technology is chosen based on a thorough understanding of the student’s unique needs and the context in which it will be used. This approach increases the likelihood of successful implementation and better outcomes for the student. Given the evolving nature, complexity, and cost of assistive technology, the requested brand or specific tool may be substituted with a Bellevue School District-approved alternative that meets the district’s data privacy and security standards.

Yes, students are typically allowed to take home district-provided devices, as long as the devices are brought back to school each day, fully charged and in good working condition. (WAC 392-172A-02015)

Families must return all district-owned equipment before moving or when the student graduates.

AT may be documented in up to four sections of the IEP: Team Considerations, Present Levels of Performance, Accommodations/Modifications, and/or Goals. BSD staff members have access to more specific information and examples in the Special Education Handbook.
