Assistive Technology

Mission

Welcome to our Assistive Technology Resource Site, where innovation enhances education! Our mission is to empower students with accessible learning experiences by leveraging the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). We believe every learner deserves an environment tailored to their unique needs, enabling them to thrive both academically and personally.

Our team supports general and special education staff in building inclusive classrooms that embrace diversity. We offer consultations, training, and state-of-the-art equipment all designed to enhance capacity to implement assistive technology solutions for students.

We’re committed to collaboration and continuous learning, providing resources that inspire and equip others to make meaningful changes that support student success.

What is Assistive Technology

Assistive technology helps ensure that students with disabilities receive a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) by enabling access to the general education curriculum and environments. It fosters active participation with same age peers and supports progress toward educational goals. Beyond academics, assistive technology can greatly enhance independence, self-expression, self-esteem, and overall quality of life.

According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), assistive technology is “Any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of children with disabilities.” [(20 U.S.C. 1401(1)].

Assistive technology can be low-tech, like communication boards or checklists, or high-tech, like special-purpose computers or tablets. It can also include hardware, software, learning materials, and more.
