P-5 Literacy Instructional Materials Adoption Committee
Purpose
The purpose of P-5 Literacy Instructional Materials Adoption Committee is to carry out the instructional materials selection process and make a recommendation to the Instructional Materials Committee based on objective evidence gathered during this process. The P-5 Literacy Instructional Materials Adoption Committee will follow the Critical Criteria outlined in BSD Procedure 0130P.
Vision and Mission
Vision: All students are critical thinkers and effective communicators, thriving in a global community centered on multilingualism.
Mission: In service of all students, we honor their assets and experiences by elevating their voices and affirming their full linguistic repertoires with culturally relevant, explicit, and systematic language and literacy instruction integrated throughout the instructional day.
Membership
The Adoption Committee offers a unique opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of students. Members of the team will make curriculum recommendations to the Instructional Materials Committee (IMC) that meet the needs of our students and community. The Adoption Committee will have diverse perspectives and representation from all aspects of our BSD communities.
Committee Composition
The development of a shared instructional vision and analysis of current core and supplemental materials will necessitate the engagement of a wide and diverse group of stakeholders. The representation on the Adoption Committee is as follows:
- Director of Language Education K-12 (Facilitator)
- Elementary Educators
- Elementary Administrators
- Parent/Family/Community Representatives
- Teaching and Learning Department Staff
Pilot Materials
The P-5 Literacy Instructional Materials Adoption Committee engaged with qualitative and quantitative data from our key stakeholders (students, families, educators, experimental use teachers, community) to put forward a recommendation regarding our curriculum, centering on students’ assets and the science of reading to ensure equitable outcomes for all. Following procedural steps, the recommendation will now progress to the Instructional Materials Committee (IMC). Once the IMC approves it, the recommendation will be presented to the School Board for approval.
The Adoption Committee recommended this proposal, which was approved by the School Board on June 6, 2024:
