Criteria for Late AP Exams

There is an economy of scale when testing large numbers of students at schools in their large gyms and libraries.  We have limited space for administration of late tests and may not be able to seat all students if too many students are impacted by serious illness or injury. Students are expected to take AP exams at the regularly scheduled time unless there are extenuating circumstances.  BSD does not grant student requests to move exams to the late testing dates because the schedule is challenging or conflicts with social events.   Students/families should consider the test schedule when registering for their AP tests.

Late Exams

Circumstances sometimes make it necessary for students to take the test late. Alternate versions of the exams are used for late testing. All late tests are administered centrally following the College Board published late test schedule.

Two exams on the same day

The College Board schedules morning and afternoon tests each day.  If the tests are administered at the school site there is sufficient time to complete the morning test, have lunch and complete the afternoon test.  It is expected that students will take both exams.  If there is a technical glitch and the morning test runs so late that a student does not get a minimum 30 minutes for lunch we will provide a late exam for the afternoon test.

Late exams scheduled without additional fees

When the cause of late testing is beyond the control of the school and the student, the College Board does not add a fee.  These circumstances include:

  • academic or athletic contest/event
  • conflict with IB exam
  • religious/holiday observance
  • disabilities accommodations issue
  • language testing off-site
  • student court appearance
  • two or more AP Exams scheduled on the same date at the same time
  • serious injury, illness, or family tragedy

Acceptable situations in the “serious injury, illness or family tragedy” category include some that are known ahead of time:

  • student is in the hospital
  • medical appointment with a specialist that cannot be rescheduled for health reasons
  • attend a family medical appointment related to a close relative’s treatment plan
  • serious illness/death of close family member, attend funeral

Additionally, there are situations that arise without warning: i.e., a student is seriously ill/injured on the day of the test and is excused by the parent using the usual methods.

Late fee applied

The College Board charges a $40 fee for reasons not listed above, including but not limited to:

  • pre-arranged family event out of the area requiring travel, i.e., the wedding of a close family member, college graduation of an immediate family member, college visit.
