Cognitive Tests

Cognitive tests measures how students process information to reach a solution, and results are based upon each student’s level of cognitive development.  Cognitive tests measure general and specific reasoning skills in three areas: verbal, quantitative and non-verbal/spatial reasoning.  Questions require reasoning skills and are not academic in nature.


Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)

For BSD students in grades K - 1 & 3 - 11.
For private/home school students in grades K - 11.

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Form 7 or 8 measures general and specific reasoning abilities in three areas.  This assessment includes the following subtests:

  • Verbal – The CogAT Verbal Battery is used to assess a student’s vocabulary, efficiency and verbal memory, ability to determine word relationships, and the ability to comprehend ideas. The CogAT Verbal test is comprised of three subtests. For grades K - 2, these subtests are: Picture Classification, and Picture Analogies (does not include Sentence Completion). For grades 3 and above, these three subtests are: Sentence Completion, Verbal Classification, and Verbal Analogies. These three subtests combined make up the CogAT Verbal score.
  • Nonverbal – The CogAT Nonverbal Battery is used to assess a student’s reasoning abilities through the use of spatial and figural content. There is no reading required to complete the CogAT Nonverbal test. These three subtests are: Figure Matrices, Paper Folding, and Figure Classification. These three subtests combined make up the CogAT Nonverbal score.
  • Quantitative – The CogAT Quantitative Battery assesses students’ quantitative reasoning and problem-solving abilities. This section evaluates the students’ level of abstract reasoning. The CogAT Quantitative Battery is comprised of three subtests: Number Series, Number Puzzles, and Number Analogies. These three subtests combined make up the CogAT Quantitative score.  Scratch paper is given to students during the quantitative section only.

The CogAT is computer-based.  The test is proctor paced, and audio led.  Instructions will be delivered individually to students via the computer (audio led) which is why headphones are required.  Students will answer questions on touch-screen computers/iPads.

CogAT Testing Level

Listed below is the test level that we use for your student’s current grade.  Each subtest is timed as listed below.  A small break is given after each battery.

Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Screening Form 

For BSD students in grade 2.

CogAT Screening Form

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Screening Form 7 or 8 is a short form of the CogAT. 

The Screening Form consists of the first subtest from each of the three batteries on the complete CogAT: Picture/Verbal Analogies, Number Analogies, and Figure Matrices.  At Levels 5/6 - 8, all items are pictorial.  At Levels 9 - 17/18, the Verbal Analogies subtest uses English words.  Like the overall composite score on the complete test, the Screening composite score estimates students' general reasoning abilities, across all three domains.

CogAT Post-Screener

The CogAT Post-Screener consists of the remaining subtests from each of the three batteries on the complete test: Sentence completion, Picture/Verbal Classification, Number Puzzles, Number Series, Paper Folding, and Figure Classification.

The CogAT Screening Form is computer-based.  The test is proctor paced, and audio led.  Instructions will be delivered individually to students via the computer (audio led) which is why headphones are required.  Students will answer questions on touch-screen computers.

Achievement tests measure skills that are taught and practiced in school.

i-Ready

For BSD students in grades K - 8.

The i-Ready Diagnostic Assessment is an adaptive test that matches the difficulty of questions to each student's ability. Students are provided with questions based on how they perform. Each additional question will adapt based on student response to the previous question, quickly and efficiently to determine student strengths and areas of growth. This assessment includes the following subtests: 

Reading 
  • Phonological Awareness 
  • Phonics 
  • High-frequency words 
  • Vocabulary 
  • Comprehension in literature 
  • Comprehension in informational texts 
Mathematics 
  • Numbers and Operations, including Counting and Cardinality and Numbers and Operations – Fractions  
  • Operations and Algebraic Thinking 
  • Measurement and Data 
  • Geometry 

Students take the diagnostic assessment three times during the school year - at the beginning, middle, and end. It is typically administered in either two 30-minute sessions for older students or three 10–20-minute sessions for elementary students.

i-Ready Testing Level

i-Ready has an online adaptive platform for students, My Path, that will replace current adaptive practice applications. 

Because the i-Ready is a classroom-based assessment, it is given at the discretion of the classroom teacher and building ITCL. The exact date and time is determined by the school/teacher. Parents will not be notified by the Advanced Learning Department when the i-Ready test will be administered to your student. If available, Advanced Learning collects score data from the current school year. 

 

Iowa Assessments (Iowa)

For BSD students in grades 9 - 11.
For private/home school students in grades K - 11.

The Iowa Assessments (Iowa) are used to measure reading and math achievement. This assessment includes the following subtests:

Reading 
  • Literary Text
  • Informational Text
  • Vocabulary
  • Explicit Meaning
  • Implicit Meaning
  • Key Ideas
  • Author's Craft
Mathematics
  • Number Sense and Operations
  • Algebraic Patterns and Connections
  • Data Analysis, Probability, & Statistics
  • Geometry
  • Measurement

The Iowa is computer-based.  The test is proctor paced, and audio led.  Instructions will be delivered individually to students via the computer (audio led) which is why headphones are required.  Students will answer questions on touch-screen computers.

Because the i-Ready platform cannot accommodate non-BSD students, private and home school students will instead be assessed using the Iowa test. Both assessments are standardized achievement tests.
