6970: Naming Schools and Facilities
- 6000: Management
Adoption Date: Sept. 9, 2012
Last Updated: March 21, 2024
A school or facility will be named or renamed by the Board of Directors as soon as possible after its construction or relocation/design has become a financial reality, the site or plan has been selected, and the architect appointed. Relocated or reconstructed facilities will continue to use the facility name currently in use unless the Superintendent recommends a name change to the Board of Directors.
With respect to naming specific buildings on a school campus or a portion of the grounds or building at any single school site, the Superintendent will establish a process which assures that names are consistent with probable facility uses and are compatible with overall school operations; and the Superintendent will recommend proposed names for schools or portions of schools, grounds or buildings to the Board of Directors for approval. Any naming actions shall be conducive to an inclusive history and shall not detract from the school district’s mission, integrity, or reputation.
The naming of any school, facility, or of a portion of a school or facility, needs to recognize that the names of public structures are expected to be in place for significant periods of time and should be reflective of the long-term use of the school or other facility. Therefore, any name selected needs to be meaningful to future generations of students and community users. Names with geographical or significant historical reference would be appropriately considered. A school, facility, or a portion of a school or facility may be named after persons for significant past or recent service, contributions or impact on the school or portion of the facility to be named. The acknowledgement of significant service, contributions or impact on the school by individuals, families, or organizations may be recognized with Superintendent approval by the placement of an appropriately sized plaque, name plate, or donor acknowledgement in a room or other portion of a school.
The superintendent will develop procedures to implement this policy that include the process for naming a facility, or of a portion of a school or facility or a portion of the grounds or building at any single school site. The process will use the critical criteria outlined in Procedure 0130P (Equity and Accountability) as a guide for community engagement focused on equity, inclusion and belonging. The procedure will also require an inventory of existing named portions of school buildings and facilities.
