The District recognizes that a healthy school environment prepares students for college, careers, and successful futures. Students who eat well-balanced meals and engage in regular exercise are better prepared for learning. The District will require health and fitness education at all grade levels to enhance student well-being and students will have access to nutritious food that meets or exceeds federal nutrition standards. Students at all grades will be provided with at least twenty-five (25 minutes daily to eat lunch.

Wellness Committee and Procedure

The district, through a wellness committee, will develop and implement a comprehensive procedure in compliance with state and federal requirements for participation in the National School Lunch Program, the School Breakfast Program, and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Smart Snacks in School nutrition standards.

Nutrition and Food Services Program

The District supports the philosophy of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program, and the Board authorizes the Superintendent or designee to administer the food services program. Any decision to enter into a contract with a food service management company will require the approval of the Board. Expenditures for food supplies shall not exceed the estimated revenues.

The Superintendent or designee is responsible for:

  • The annual distribution of meal applications and applications and determining a student’s eligibility for school meal benefits;
  • Protecting the identity of students eligible for free or reduced-price meals:
  • Planning meals that meet USDA meal pattern requirements;
  • Scheduling meal periods that comply with USDA or state regulations;
  • Considering sustainability impacts for food and meal choices;
  • Establishing a Food Safety Plan;
  • Determining meal prices and submitting them to the board for approval annually;
  • Using the full entitlement of USDA Foods;
  • Maintaining a nonprofit school food service account;
  • Directing all revenues from school meals to the school meal program;
  • Establishing meal charge procedures if not serving meals at no cost to students;
  • Accommodating children with special dietary needs;
  • Compliance with USDA nondiscrimination policies;
  • Following proper procurement procedures; and
  • Compliance with the Smart Snacks in School standards.

Health and Fitness

The District will implement a comprehensive health and fitness curriculum that meets state health and fitness standards. The curriculum will provide opportunities for developmentally appropriate instruction for grades K-12. Students in grades one through eight will receive instruction and practice in basic movement and fine motor skills, progressive physical fitness, and wellness activities through age-appropriate activities. High school students will be required to complete two credits of health and fitness. High schools will offer a variety of health and fitness classes. Suitable adapted physical education will be included as part of individual education plans for students with chronic health problems, other physical conditions, or special needs that preclude such student’s participation in regular physical education instruction or activities. In addition to required health and fitness education, the District will provide co-curricular physical activity programs, including inclusive intramural programs and physical activity clubs and physical activity programs offered by the school and/or community-based organizations outside of school hours.
