TRANSPORTATION OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

PROCEDURE

1.0 Students with disabilities assigned to a school in their attendance area will be provided transportation in accordance with the provisions of Policy 8200.

2.0 Students with disabilities assigned to a school outside their attendance area or those students whose unique needs require transportation regardless of school of assignment will be transported in accordance with the following provisions of WAC 392-172-204.

2.1 Methods. Transportation of students with disabilities shall include these options, exercised in the following sequence:

2.1.1 a scheduled school bus;

2.1.2 contracted transportation, including public transportation; and

2.1.3 other transportation arrangements, including that provided by parents.

2.2 Student Welfare. Transportation of students with disabilities shall be in accordance with the rules of the Superintendent of Public Instruction governing public school district transportation.

2.3 Bus Aides and Drivers. The employment, training, and supervision of bus aides and drivers shall be the responsibility of the school district.

2.4 Special Equipment. All special equipment which may include lifts, wheelchair holders, restraints, and two-way radios shall comply with specifications for school buses as now or hereafter established by the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

2.5 Time on Bus. Wherever reasonably possible, no student shall be required to ride more than sixty (60) minutes one way.
