Superintendent’s Blog: We Belong - The Election and Beyond, Affirming Our Beloved Community
Dear Bellevue School District Community,
On the eve of the 2024 presidential elections, I want to reach out with a reminder of our shared values as a community. Election season often stirs up strong emotions — passion, excitement, or frustration and worry. These feelings come from a place of caring deeply about our country and our future, and that’s something we can all relate to.
As we approach election day and the days that follow, I encourage us to again turn to the principles of Dr. King’s vision of the Beloved Community. These ideals call on us to embrace unity, to seek understanding across our differences, and to support each other with kindness and respect. Let’s keep in mind that our community is a place where all voices are valued and heard, and let’s commit to lifting each other up — especially now, when the strength of our connections matters most.
A beloved community isn’t about agreeing on everything; it’s about building a foundation of respect, compassion, and empathy. These qualities are more than just words — they’re daily actions. Whether it’s extending patience in a conversation, choosing understanding over judgment, or offering a word of encouragement to a colleague or classmate, these small gestures make a powerful impact.
I urge each of us to be extra mindful right now of how our words and actions affect those around us, especially our students, who watch us to understand how to navigate the world. Our example teaches them how to approach disagreement, handle intense emotions, and build bridges where there might otherwise be divides. In this time of passionate opinions and choices, let’s strive to be models of empathy and respect, showing that even when we disagree with someone’s politics, we can stay united as a community that values every individual.
When things happen globally or locally, like presidential elections, our kids and schools are likely to be impacted. Staff in our schools will be modeling and encouraging the same openness, empathy, and, most importantly, support for each of our students.
Thank you for all that you do to make our district a place where every student, family, and staff member feels seen, supported, and valued. Together, let’s continue to create the beloved community we aspire to be.
With appreciation,
Dr. Aramaki
