Reimagining Middle Schools Update

Reimagining Middle Schools Update

In the 2022-2023 school year, the Bellevue School District launched a Reimagining Middle Schools (RMS) team to re-envision the middle school experience. Following research, evidenced-based practices and new innovative approaches and using an Equity-Centered Design Thinking approach, the team, comprised of students, educators, leaders, parents and community members recommended the district move forward with two models: Advisory and Problem-Based Learning.

This year, the 2023-2024 Reimagining Middle School Design Team, an exceptional group of educators, students and families, spent the past several months working in collaboration with stakeholders to design what these two models could look and feel like in BSD. With a strong emphasis on student-centered approach and a focus on addressing the social-emotional and academic needs of middle school students, the RMS Design Team is pleased to share their recommendation for 2024-2025.

Advisory

To experience the benefits of advisory and create a true community where BSD middle schools partner with students and families, the Design Team believes the advisory period is an essential part of the school day — but is more than a class. It is a shift in culture, mindsets and practices. In the 2024-2025 school year, we will continue working with our middle school leaders, educators and staff to explore the changes needed to successfully put advisory into practice. Implementation will be tailored to meet the needs of each school community.

Problem-Based Learning

By prioritizing active learning, skill development, personalized instruction and flexible learning environments, problem-based learning can be a powerful tool to reimagine middle school as a place where students are engaged, empowered and prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. In 2024-2025, middle schools will begin implementing problem-based learning units.

We are excited to support our middle schools and to continue to work with our educators, staff, students and community to create vibrant and supportive environments where everyone can belong, learn and lead.
