Bellevue Parent Teacher Students Associations Support Our Community
On March 23, Bellevue PTSA Council hosted a Family Community Service Event in partnership with Backpack Meals for Kids. Elementary school students and their families joined together to assemble 400 weekend snack packs for those who receive services through the Backpack Meals for Kids organization.
In 2011, Backpack Meals for Kids grew out of a need to ensure students had sufficient nutritional support during weekends when they could not receive regular meals through the district’s nutrition services. In response, community volunteers began delivering backpacks of food items to students at two district schools to take home for the weekend. Today, backpacks meals for kids are delivered to BSD high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools. They contain enough items for easy-to-fix-meals for two entrees, two lunch items, two breakfast items, and snacks. Backpack Meals for Kids is a community-based nonprofit organization run entirely by volunteers.
The day of service was a great opportunity for elementary students to work together and give back to by filling packs and making cards for each student. In addition to the elementary students and families who participated in the event, high school volunteers provided their support. Participants represented Clyde Hill, Enatai, Phantom Lake, Puesta del Sol, Somerset, Spiritridge, Tyee, Bellevue High, Interlake and Newport.
