Attendance Matters: New Semester, New You!

Attendance Matters: New Semester, New You!

The second semester is a great time for students to reset. One of the best ways to make the most of this fresh start is by setting short-term goals. These are smaller, achievable targets that help students stay on track and motivated throughout the semester.

Short-Term Goals

These help keep students focused and motivated, and they offer quick wins and visible progress.

Examples of Great Goals

  • Participate in class by raising your hand at least once each day.
  • Study for 30 minutes every day of the week for a Friday quiz.
  • Review chemistry notes for 20 minutes each evening.

Reward Yourself!

Rewarding yourself, even for small tasks, really works!

  • Boost Motivation: Rewards keep students pushing forward.
  • Prevent Burnout: Breaks and rewards help students avoid stress and exhaustion.
  • Build Confidence: Achieving goals and rewarding yourself builds self-esteem.
  • Create Momentum: Even small wins motivate students to set and achieve more goals.
Quick, Simple Rewards Larger Rewards Non-Material Rewards

Take a 15-minute break.

Enjoy a night out with friends.

Spend time doing a favorite hobby.

Enjoy a favorite snack or song. Buy yourself a small treat. Reflect on your success by journaling.
Go for a quick walk outside. Take a day off from homework. Enjoy a good night’s sleep or a relaxing bath.

How to use Rewards

  1. Set it (first): Decide on a motivating reward before you start working.
  2. Match it: Smaller goals deserve small rewards; bigger goals get bigger rewards.
  3. Track it: Keep track of completed tasks to see your progress.
  4. Be consistent: Reward yourself every time you meet a goal, even if it’s a small one.
Example Strive for Five!

Goal: Attend every class, every day

Attend 5 days a week
Reward: I get to go to a movie on Friday Don't miss more than 5 days per semester

Using short-term goals and rewards is a great way to stay motivated, make steady progress, and build positive habits!
