Congratulations to Michael Saalwaechter, a senior at Newport who competed in the 2016 Drone Racing Championship, in Muncie, Ind.  Saalwaechter finished seventh in the nation recognizing him as the seventh fastest drone pilot.  He was also one of the youngest competitors.

Earlier this summer Saalwaechter competed in the Pacific Northwest Division 5A regional competition, where he placed second.  Although he didn’t qualify for the Championship by this placing, he was added to the competition’s “List.”  The List is a comprehensive ranking of all pilots who competed in a regional final.  Pilots are ranked based on their best three rounds and break ties based on their fastest lap time.  From the List, the top 16 pilots are invited to the Championship.  Saalwaechter ranked first on the List, which qualified him for an invitation to the Championship.
