Gifted Services in Kindergarten

At the beginning of the school year, all Kindergarten students are observed for gifted characteristics and take the following assessments during the school day:
- TRC (Text Reading Comprehension)
- DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills)
- Literacy Skills in Chinese and Spanish for Students in Language Immersion Programs
- Writing Performance Task
- Math Unit Assessment
- WAKids State Assessment
PLEASE NOTE: There is no need for parents of BSD Kindergartners to apply as this process takes place automatically in the classroom.
Students who consistently perform two years beyond their grade level in literacy and/or math will be moved into file review for further assessment. Permission for file review will be sent to your home by December 18, 2017 (letters were mailed out via US Mail on 12/15/17).
Students who reside in the Bellevue School District attendance area but attend a private school may apply for Kindergarten Gifted Services from September 1 – September 30, 2017. Applications are available at the Gifted Programs Office or you may request one by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Private school students will take the following assessments by the end of October:
- Reading Performanace Task
- Writing Performance Task
- Math Performance Task
Kindergarten students will no longer be given the CogAT 7 Screener assessment.
Students who are identified for gifted services in Kindergarten will no longer be automatically enrolled in the Gifted Elementary School Program (GESP) when they reach 2nd grade. Students who would like to attend the GESP at Cherry Crest, Medina, Somerset, or Spiritridge must apply for gifted testing during the fall of their 1st grade year.
File Review Process
Parents who receive a file review letter will be asked to provide permission for the district to conduct further assessment. This may include but is not limited to:
- Observational Rating Scales
- Reading Data: TRC (Text Reading Comprehension) & STAR Reading Assessment
- Writing Data: Observation and Samples
- Math Data: Unit Assessment, Performance Task, STAR Math Assessment
A district team will analyze all available student performance data and determine if the student is in need of services. Students demonstrating consistent academic performance two years beyond grade level expectation in literacy and/or math will be identified for differentiated services at their neighborhood or choice school.
The file review process will be completed by mid-January. Results will be sent to parents via U.S. Mail by the end of January.
Kindergarten students who are identified as in need of gifted services will be provided differentiated services in a traditional classroom setting at their neighborhood school. Students may continue to receive differentiated services at their school through 12th grade.
An individualized service plan will be created at the time of identification and in the fall of each subsequent school year. This plan will be developed by a school-based team, including the classroom teacher. The plan will be sent to the parent for consent. Once consent is given, services will begin in the second trimester.
