The Secondary Math Adoption Process Timeline

October & November 2008

Secondary math teachers, special education teachers, ESL teachers and administrators met  to define a set of values to guide our adoption process.  These values are the lens through which we are evaluating instructional materials and have been considered in every part of our process.  They can be found, along with the District Mission Statement on the Math Adoption Home Page.

This group also identified stakeholders that would be included in our process.   The stakeholders identified include:

  • Our Students

  • Regular education students

  • English as a second language learners

  • Special education students

  • High achievers in mathematics

  • Teachers (Math, Science, ESL, Special Education, Reading)

  • Parents

  • Community Members

  • Administrators & School Board Members

December 2008 – February 2009

In December, we appointed a sub-committee, the HS Math Materials Selection Steering Committee, consisting of one math teacher from BHS, IHS, NHS, SHS, International and Robinswood, one ESL teacher, one special education teacher and two math curriculum representatives.  The committee developed a rubric for scoring materials, narrowed down the choices from 19 potential programs to 8, looked deeply at an algebra and a geometry topic in the remaining programs and recommended 5 programs for teachers to score.  The programs sent to teachers were:

  • CME Algebra-Geometry-Algebra, an NSF funded math curriculum developed at the Center for Mathematics Education at the University of Massachusetts and published by Pearson Prentice Hall

  • Discovering Algebra-Geometry-Algebra, published by Key Curriculum Press

  • Holt Algebra-Geometry-Algebra, published by Holt Rinehart Winston

  • Prentice Hall Algebra-Geometry-Algebra, published by Pearson Prentice Hall

  • Core Plus Mathematics, an NSF funded math curriculum developed at the University of Western Michigan and published by Glencoe

February – March 2009

Materials, rubrics and scoring sheets were placed in high school buildings.  Middle school HIAG 2 teachers were invited to go over to the high schools in their attendance areas to score materials.

In mid-March, the Peer Review data for all 5 programs was presented to the HS Math Materials Selection Steering Committee along with a district generated readability and match to state standards studies.  The committee was asked to recommend one, two or three programs to pilot.  After some debate and discussion, the committee decided unanimously to recommend piloting the Holt and Discovering materials.

The recommendation along with the supporting data was presented to the larger group and was accepted unanimously by the 33 teachers attending the meeting.  The group also indicated unanimous confidence in the process.

April – June 2009

Schools started piloting materials in 8th grade Integrated Math Topics 3 classes and 10th grade Honors Integrated Algebra Trigonometry 3 classes.  Teacher survey data and student assessment results were collected.

September 2009 – January 2010

Materials Pilot

Materials are being piloted in Integrated Math Topics 3 (8th), Integrated Algebra Geometry 1 (9th), Honors Integrated Algebra Geometry 2 (9th) and Honors Integrated Algebra Trigonometry 3 (10th).  A list of pilot units and dates can be found on the Pilot page of this website.

Data to be collected from the pilot:

  • Teacher surveys focused on instructional strategies, cognitive demand, support for learners of all types and the quality of the materials themselves

  • Student surveys focused on their experiences as learners, confidence level and the usefulness of textbook and online resources as sources of information

  • Parent surveys focused on how well the materials support their students

  • Student assessment data focused on topics covered in the pilot materials

November – December 2009

Math Information Nights will be held at high schools for each attendance area.

Community Materials Review Survey:

Parents will have an opportunity to review and submit feedback on the two programs we are considering.  The materials will be located in the BHS, IHS, NHS and SHS libraries starting November 6th.

October 2009 – March 2010

Math Adoption Committee

The Math Adoption Committee will meet a minimum of 6 times to consider and recommend instructional materials.

Course Sequence:

2010-11:   Algebra 1 (8th grade) and Geometry (9th grade)
We will supplement the Geometry course in the 2010-11 school year with a unit of Algebra for the cohort of students that moved from the integrated IMT3 program to the non-integrated Geometry class.  This will ensure that this group will have met all the benchmarks of Algebra 1 before reaching Algebra 2.

2011-12: Algebra 2

2012-13: Pre-Calculus
