Welcome to the 2017-18 school year. I hope you have all been enjoying your summer with family and friends. I’d like to offer a special welcome to our 6th grade families and all families who are new to Odle or Bellevue.
Our mission is to provide all students with an exemplary college preparatory education so they can succeed in college, career, and life. Each year, building on a tradition of excellence, we make a commitment to continuous improvement so that we may realize this mission for each student. As we begin a new school year on Thursday, August 31, please know that the entire Odle staff is here to challenge your student to reach new levels of learning, to support the unique needs of your student, and to promote a safe, equitable, and inclusive school environment.
Below I am including important information for your review in preparation for the school year:
Taking Care of Business Days (TCBD)
All Odle families should plan to attend our “Taking Care of Business Days” (TCBD).
Families of 7th and 8th grade students should attend on August 23rd between 8:30 am – 3:30 pm. Families of 6th grade students should attend on August 24th between 9:00 am – 2:00 pm.
The purpose of TCBD is to pay fees, turn in and pick up forms, ask questions, get students’ pictures taken, and pick up students’ draft schedules. Students’ schedules at TCBD will be draft schedules; final schedules will be distributed on the first day of school (starting at 8:00am).
6th Grade Orientation (“WEB”)
All 6th grade students should plan to attend our 6th Grade Orientation program, “Where Everybody Belongs” (WEB), on Thursday, August 24, from 8:45 am – 12:30 pm in the Odle gym. WEB is only for students. If you have questions about WEB, please contact one of our teacher WEB facilitators: Kat Farkas (firstname.lastname@example.org), Deanna Burmester (email@example.com), or Brandon Yancey (firstname.lastname@example.org).
6th Grade Principal’s Coffee
On August 24, I will be hosting a “Principal’s Coffee” to welcome 6th grade parents, explain the TCBD process, and preview beginning-of-the-year activities for 6th grade students and families. We will meet in the library at 8:45 am after 6th graders are dropped off for WEB.
One-to-One Laptop Initiative
All Odle students will be issued a laptop computer during the first few days of school as part of our One-to-One Laptop Initiative.
The One-to-One Laptop Initiative helps provide more equitable access to technology and provides all students with greater access to a broader range of educational content and media, including new ways of representing information, more tools for expression and communication, more individualized learning, and additional opportunities for intellectual engagement.
The initiative also supports a greater emphasis in middle school on college-and-career readiness skills, such as inquiry-driven esearch, digital citizenship, and authentic collaboration. For those interested in additional details about our One-to-One Laptop Initiative, click here.
We will be sharing additional information about this initiative, including a Student and Parent Laptop Handbook and a Student User Agreement, as we get closer to the laptop distribution date.
Curriculum Night September (September 14th)
Our annual Curriculum Night is Thursday, September 14th, from 6:00 pm-8:25 pm.
The evening will begin in our main gym where I will provide an overview of our instructional program followed by presentations from the Odle PTSA and the Bellevue Schools Foundation. Then, from 6:45 pm – 8:25 pm, you will have an opportunity to attend 10-minute presentations from each of your student’s teachers. Teachers will provide an overview of the course content and expectations for students’ learning.
The Odle PTSA is one of our critical community partners. The Odle PTSA supports many enrichment programs at Odle, provides opportunities for volunteering at Odle, and advocates for students at the state level. I am attaching here the PTSA membership form, fall fundraising form, and volunteer form: PTSA Membership Form Fall Fundraising Form PTSA Volunteer Form
The Bellevue Schools Foundation (BSF) is another one of our critical community partners. BSF provides essential community support for the Bellevue School District. As an independent, private, non-profit organization, the Bellevue Schools Foundation promotes and helps fund the best possible learning opportunities for all students in the Bellevue School District. For a summary of the programs supported by BSF, click here. I am attaching here the BSF donation form: BSF Donation Form
If you have general questions, please call our main office at 425-456-6600. Our main office is currently open from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. Beginning Monday, August 21st, we will resume regular hours (weekdays 8:00 am – 4:00 pm). Updates and information about school news and activities will also be posted on Odle’s school website.
The Viking News, the PTSA’s electronic newsletter, is another good source for information. The Viking News contains important information about both school and PTSA events. If you are not receiving the Viking News and would like to, you can sign up here.
A full listing of various class and school fees are available here: School Fees .
Some fees may apply for your student. Fees for elective classes (if applicable) will be automatically added to your student’s account in mid‐September and can only be paid at that time. We recommend paying fees online at www.bsd405.org/pay. During TCBD, we will encourage families to take care of the following fees (if they apply): PE Clothes for first semester; Yearbook order; ASB membership; payments toward 6th Grade Camp. Elective class fees will be paid later online or in the main office.
Free and Reduced Lunches / Fee Waivers
Families must check the Fee Waiver box when submitting an application for Free and Reduced Meals through Nutrition Services to be eligible for either free or reduced fees. These forms will be available through Nutrition Services beginning August 14. The most expedient way to turn in this form is online at the district’s website.
School Picture Orders
Students will get their picture taken during Taking Care of Business Days. More information about ordering school pictures will be available during TCBD.
Finalized Class Schedule
When classes begin on Thursday, August 31, all students will need to pick up their final schedule between 8:00 am – 8:30 am. Counselors will be working during the last few days before school starts to balance class sizes, make necessary corrections, and register new students. Some students’ schedules will change from the draft schedule that will be distributed on Taking Care of Business Days.
