Seven Bellevue Schools receive award honoring top-performing schools
At Woodridge Elementary, they’re jumping for joy. Over at Bellevue High, they have five new reasons to celebrate. They are among the seven schools in the Bellevue School District who just heard the exciting news that they’ve won a 2011 Washington Achievement Award. The highly-selective award, announced February 1 by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and State Board of Education, celebrates schools for overall excellence and recognizes achievement in several categories, including science, math and improvement.
Six Bellevue schools received the Overall Excellence award: Cherry Crest Elementary, Enatai Elementary, Woodridge Elementary, Chinook Middle School, Bellevue High School and Newport High School. They are among the top five percent of all elementary, middle, high and comprehensive schools statewide, based on the past two years of data.
Bellevue schools also received Special Recognition in the Language Arts, Math, Science, Extended Graduation Rate and Improvement categories. Two schools, Bellevue High and Newport High, were honored in multiple categories.

At repeat Overall Excellence winner Woodridge Elementary, they’re very excited about the recognition. “This award is indicative of the collective commitment of our school community in collaboratively meeting the needs of our diverse learning population,” says Principal Liz Ritz. “This award is not only a reflection of the tremendous work of our Woodridge students and staff, but also the positive partnership between the Bellevue School District, our school community, and Woodridge families.”
According to OSPI, award-winning schools share at least one common attribute: the power to profoundly affect student learning. The award is based on a school’s performance according to the Washington Achievement Index, a comprehensive measurement of how schools perform over time. The award honors successful schools, in order to highlight and share their best practices.
Washington Achievement Award recipients will be honored at a special ceremony in late April.
