Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the Institute dates for 2012?
The dates for 2012 are Monday, June 25 through Thursday, June 28.

2. How do I know if I am registered?
You should receive a confirmation by email five days from receipt of an e-mail or fax registration and seven days from receipt of a postal mail registration. If you do not receive a confirmation, please call us at 1-877-456-4399 or 425-456-4161 or e-mail us at api@bsd405.org . Please do not assume you are registered if you have not received your confirmation letter.

3. Some courses offer new/exp and sessions I/II-what do those mean?
New means new to that subject or have taught it two years or less. Exp means that you have taught in that subject area three or more years. Session numbers simply mean we offer more than one class in that area, like English Lang. They are not sequential so you do not have to take I before II-the same material is covered in both. The only difference is the instructor.

4. How can I pay for the Institute? Do I have to pay when I register?
You can pay by purchase order to hold your spot and then either pay at the Institute or have the district send a check by the end of the institute. Otherwise, full payment by check or credit card (Visa or Mastercard) is due at the time you register. Please note you must register by June 1st or a $45 late fee will apply. You can not hold a spot by credit card (use the card and not have it run). Payment must be sent by mail, fax or in person-we can not register you over the phone.

5. If I pay by check or purchase order (PO), who do I make it out to?
Please make the check or PO out to BSD API (Bellevue School District Advanced Placement Institute) not to College Board.

6. If I can't attend-do I get my money back?
Yes, you can get a full refund if we are notified in writing by June 1st. (If you call, you will be asked to send an email.) After June 1st, written cancellations are subject to a $50 fee for processing and handling.

7. May I receive a refund if I am a "no show" at the Institute?
You may only receive a refund if we are notified in writing of non-attendance before the Institute. (See #6 above). No shows will be charged full price.

8. Where are the hotels located?

Most hotels are in the downtown area close to Bellevue Square and Lincoln Center and other shops and restaurants. None of the hotels are close to the high school itself which is why we offer a free shuttle service to the downtown hotels.  Day's Inn is about five miles from downtown and the hotel offers it's own shuttle service.

9. How early does the shuttle bus leave the hotels?
The shuttle bus leaves at 6:30 A.M. from the hotels so that the attendees will have time for breakfast.

10. How do I earn clock hours?  When do I register for clock hours?
You earn clock hours by attending your session. You must sign the attendance rosters both in the morning and afternoon. Please register for clock hours online after you have registered for the Institute. Please note-the official transcript form you receive on the last day is for you to copy and turn into your district. Bellevue does not mail transcripts. Clock hours are free

11. Do I pay for college credit hours before the institute begins or at registration?
Three Seattle Pacific University (SPU) quarter credit hours are available for $225 on Monday, the first day of the Institute. Credit hours are paid directly to SPU. You will register on Monday, June 25, 2012 in the classrooms or in the library after 3:30 PM. Credit cards or checks are accepted.  Please check the university credit link for more information.

12. What should I bring?
Please bring anything requested by your presenter.  Most presenters request a sample lesson in which copies need to be made ahead of time.  The presenters also suggest laptops and flash drives.  You will need some form of payment if you take college credit.

13. If I have specific questions about the class or for the teacher-what can I do?
Please go to the sessions button for more information. Most presenters have an email address or phone number available on their session page. If your questions are not answered after reading the session page, please email your presenter. If you still need assistance after communicating with the presenter, please contact Kay Whelan, AP Coordinator at whelank@bsd405.org.

14. May I register for more than one session?
You may not attend more than one four-day session.

15. May I add a tour after registration?
Yes, on a space available basis. We usually fill the tours but also have cancellations the day of the tour.  Tours are non refundable after June 1.

16. May I check my email at the institute?
Yes, you may check your email on the computers in the library.

17. May I drive every day to the institute?
We ask that, if you are staying at a hotel, you leave your car at the hotel and take the shuttle buses. Parking is very limited.

18. Are most participants from the local area?
The majority of people are from Washington and it's neighboring states, but participants from many states and countries attend each year. In 2011, the people in the US came from: Alaska, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
