How to Create a Transcript Information - Monday, March 19, 2012

How to make a home school transcript
   Options:
1.    From Running Start, if a student receives an AA they can then apply to a 4 year college. Still apply as a freshman but credits transfer and status becomes Junior status.

Running Start program can be done at any area community colleges (i.e., Bellevue College, Lake Wash Voc Tech, etc.). Tuition is paid for by the state, student pays for books and fees.
a.    Transcripts: From Lee Binz’ “Making a Transcript” Handout.
Website resources:  www.thehomescholar.com, www.totaltranscriptsolution.com, www.homeschooldiploma.com has several links to transcript solutions or services.
A transcript is simply transferring your learning into numbers for the simple one page record. A comprehensive record or portfolio, beyond the transcript, is needed to back up the transcript.
b.    The transcript should show credits for anything you do between 9-12th grades or anything done at the 9th-12th grade level (i.e. Algebra in 8th grade).

How to determine HS level: Algebra and above, done at any age. High school level text book = 1 credit. See BSD Course Description Catalogue for examples (http://www.bsd405.org/Default.aspx?tabid=58)

What a college is looking for:
  1. Transcript – with in-depth studies
  2. College essay – expound on your passion, how you got there, what you want to do with it, set yourself apart, have a creative approach.
  3. Log hours of community service noting date, activity, supervisor, hours served. Having a focus in community service is good for college applications. Have hours verified by someone who is in the field of service.
  4. SAT & ACT test scores are important
  5. Compass test for math and writing placement entering Running Start
For example: University of Washington admissions site has a page to guide home school applicants (http://admit.washington.edu/Requirements/Freshman/Homeschool)

For information on College preparation, go to the Bellevue School District website (www.bsd405.org) click on "Academics, Curriculum and Services,"  "High School,"  "College Preparation."  There are links to the highlights to the District's 2012 "Future By Design" conference.

CLEP exam – honors course exam
The College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) gives you the opportunity to receive college credit for what you already know by earning qualifying scores on any of 33 examinations. Earn credit for knowledge you've acquired through independent study, prior course work, on-the-job training, professional development, cultural pursuits, or internships. Find more information at www.collegeboard.com.

AP (advanced placement) exam – for Bellevue School District students they may be able to take the test at their neighborhood high school

If you begin with Running Start and finish with an AA degree, you can apply through the college for a state High School diploma.
