Traffic Plan...posted - Thursday, August 25, 2011

Traffic Congestion Times
Morning
School Start:                         7:30 a.m.
Peak Congestion:                7:10 – 7:35
Afternoon
School Dismissal:                2:30 p.m. is the end of classes, 3:05 p.m. is the end of the daily tutorial (12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays)
     Peak Congestion:                2:30 – 2:45 (12:30 – 12:45 on Wednesdays)

Traffic Flow Plan
  • To reduce the amount of congestion in the morning, it is recommended to parents that they drop off students between 7:00 and 7:15 if possible.
  • The primary location for student drop-off is the main entrance off 24th Street. Parents should try to access the main entrance from the West. (Turning right into the parking lot from 24th Street)
  • As parents leave the main entrance after dropping off students, traffic moves at a more rapid rate if cars exit to the east towards 164th Ave SE (to the right).
  • Dropping students off in the student parking lot (off of 164th Ave. NE) IS NOT PREFERRED. If parents do choose this location, they will drive all the way to the back of the school before dropping off their student. (Please see attached map.) Parents should not stop in the middle or pull into a parking spot. Cars stopping to drop off students or backing back out into traffic slows the entrance of staff and students and creates a safety hazard. When leaving, parents should exit South on 164th Ave. NE (to the right).
  • Parents should wait to pick up students in front of the school only and should access this off of NE 24th Street. Due to the number of students staying after school for Tutorial, clubs, sports, or other activities, the amount of traffic at a given time period in the afternoon is reduced.
  • Parents should not drop off students on any of the major streets (24th or 164th). This blocks traffic and creates a safety concern.
  • There is no entrance onto the campus using the bus access driveway off of 164th Ave. NE at ANY time.
  • There is no access to the bus driveway through the main parking lot off of 24th between 7:00am - 7:35am and 2:00pm - 2:45pm
  • Please observe the 10 mph speed limit in all of the parking lots. This is an important safety reminder as there are a number of crosswalks on the school campus.

Communication Plan to Parents/Students
  • The above Traffic Flow Plan will be communicated to parents before school via the PTSA newsletter, through the School Messenger system and will be posted on the school web site.
  • Follow-up reinforcement messages will occur throughout the school year.
  • Parking guidelines for students are printed in the Student Handbook and will be communicated to all students via announcements during school. Students may also find the Traffic Flow Plan on the school web site.
  • Students primarily park in the student parking lot off of 164th Ave. NE and rarely access the front parking lot. As a result, the communication emphasis of the above plan will be to parents.

Traffic Monitoring
  • To monitor the traffic flow in the mornings, Interlake staff will be out in the parking lots in the morning at the beginning of the school year. They will reinforce the traffic flow guidelines—if necessary—and will provide information on continued problems. They will then periodically monitor the parking lot throughout the school year to ensure continued compliance.
  • Interlake’s School Resource Officer will assist staff as needed.
