Keeping the Dream Alive

Highland students have dreams about their futures.  The staff at Highland is dedicated to keeping those dreams alive.  This 4 minute video featuring Highland Middle School was presented this past June at the Bellevue Schools Foundation's annual fundraising event, Spring for Schools Luncheon. The Luncheon's theme was High Expectations Lead to High Achievements. One of the ways Highland is helping its students be successful in Language Arts is through the district's Springboard program.  Funding for Springboard is provided by the Bellevue Schools Foundation. Highland Middle School Assessments:


The federal No Child Left Behind Act requires that students be assessed each year in reading and math, grades 3 through 8, plus once in high school. In Washington State, we test each spring with the WASL (Washington Assessment of Student Learning).

WASL tests are intended to assess whether students have sufficiently mastered a set of grade-level standards for a particular subject. In other words, “How many students have learned what they need to know – and can demonstrate that learning?” Some test questions are multiple-choice, but most require students to explain their answers and ask for short or extended responses. WASL scores are reported in 4 levels: “Exceeds Standard,” “Meets Standard,” “Below Standard,” and “Well Below Standard.”

The IB Middle Years Program at Highland

 

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP), which is a program of rigorous, international education designed to help students develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills necessary to participate actively and responsibly in a changing world

 

Advancement Via Individual Determination

 

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a nation-wide program designed to prepare students for four-year college eligibility

 

Special Education Center - special education teachers, occupational and physical therapists, and speech and language pathologists serve developmentally delayed middle school students

Special Education /Learning Disabled Program- students with specialized needs participate in regular classrooms and work with special education teachers

 

English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) - English classes emphasizing vocabulary, reading, writing, and American history for students who are learning in English

Peer Mediation - Peer mediation is both a program and a process where students of the same age-group facilitate resolving disputes between two people or small groups.  This process has proven effective in schools around the United States, changing the way students understand and resolve conflict in their lives. 


Chapter I (Title I) - materials and support for students who need help with math and reading

After-school Learning Opportunities - After-school learning time in reading and math delivered by certified staff; after school tutorial, Homework Club and ¿Tienes Tarea?, each of which are programs that provide students support in completing homework and class projects and preparing for class quizzes and tests

 

After-School Activities - Bellevue Parks & Club Bellevue - after-school activities such as photography, sports, crafts and cooking are offered Monday through Friday, 2:30 – 5:30 p.m.

 

Special Services Available at Highland:

 

Youth Eastside Services - is a lifeline for kids and families coping with challenges such as emotional distress, substance abuse and violence. Through intervention, outreach and prevention, YES builds confidence and responsibility, strengthens family relationships, and advocates for a safer community that cares for its youth

 

SUCCESS - The SUCCESS Mentoring Program recruits caring adults to serve as a positive role model to young people who are struggling with their academic, social or personal lives. SUCCESS mentors encourage youth to develop the skills and qualities they need to be successful in life, help them build self-esteem and provide them with continual support and guidance

 

VIBES - adult mentors who foster individual student success through weekly work one-on-one in classes. We welcomed 34 mentors last year.
