The secondary math adoption committee, which will make recommendations to the district for the adoption of new math textbooks to be used in grades 8-10, met for the first time on Tuesday, October 6th. Specifically, the committee’s purpose is to recommend for adoption either the Holt or Discovering textbook series for Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. The district will be adopting one of these programs as its secondary instructional materials for math beginning in the fall of 2010.
The committee’s recommendation will be made by consensus based upon evidence gathered during the adoption process. The committee is made up of teachers, parents, math curriculum representatives and administrators. They will meet several times in the next 6 months to research best practices in math education, examine the alignment of each textbook to state and national math standards, and analyze data generated from the textbook pilot.
Math teachers in 8th-10th grades throughout the district are piloting both of these texts and gathering information. Parents on the committee and district math curriculum representatives are meeting next week to plan for the upcoming secondary math informational meetings for all parents and community members. These meetings will provide parents in the district an overview of the adoption process, information about the two programs and an opportunity to look at the texts. In addition, we are in the process of developing a “secondary math adoption website” to provide the community with ongoing information regarding the process. Look for additional information regarding the website and community information nights in the next couple of weeks.
