Medina Elementary opens to rave reviews

New entry welcomes Medina students and parents on the first day of school.

Most Medina parents brought their children to school the first day; even grandparents tagged along. Everyone wanted to see the school they had been awaiting for the past 15 months. Cameras were flashing everywhere, as families strolled through the enclosed two-story lodge style building, which replaced the previous single story California-style, open-campus school dating back to the 1950's. The new classrooms are outfitted with ample technology that includes new computers, SmartBoards and LCD projectors. Although school started with a few spaces still needing work, the
weather was cooperative and any bumps in the road were overshadowed by the excitement of being in a new building.
More building projects underway
The new Medina represents the latest elementary school to undergo a complete rebuild in recent years. As part of a district-wide capital improvement project made possible by a levy approved by voters in 2002, Medina joins Phantom Lake, Somerset and Lake Hills as schools that have been rebuilt since 2003.
During this school year, Woodridge Elementary will be rebuilt while staff and students are temporarily housed in the district's swing school building, Bellewood. Meanwhile,
Newport High school is undergoing an extensive renovation while staff and students are still on campus. Some new sections of Newport High opened up this September with more sections scheduled for completion during the school year.
Next year, Woodridge will return to its campus and new school while Sherwood Forest is housed at Bellewood. Sherwood Forest will be rebuilt at the same time that Newport Heights is having its new school constructed on the former Lake Heights Elementary School site. Both schools will start the 2008-09 school year in a new building.
