English Language Learners (ELL) Advisory Committee

 

Purpose

The purpose of the ELL Advisory Committee will be to determine the service delivery models most suited for English Language Learners in the Bellevue School District for consideration of program implementation. This Committee will sunset after a formal recommendation to the Director of Student Services and/or Superintendent’s Cabinet but may be reconvened for input on additional ELL matters.
 

Role

The role of the members of the ELL Advisory Committee will be:
  • Review needs of English Learners within the Bellevue School District
  • Review data of English Learners
  • Analyze and review findings of the outside review group with regard to English Learners
  • Make a formal recommendation to the Director of Student Services for implementation.
 

Criteria

Committee members will be selected based on the following:
  • Direct experience with ELL students and families
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues and concerns facing ELL students, families and educators 
  • Experience working collaboratively in groups and an ability to consider perspectives other than their own
  • Perspectives relative to long-term planning of district programs serving all children
  • Dedication to serving all children rather than one interest group, perspective or view
  • Solid oral and written skills
 

Expectations

Members for this committee will be expected to:
  • Attend scheduled meetings regularly and on time
  • Focus on student achievement as the paramount priority
  • Work collaboratively toward a solution with other members of the committee
  • Solicit feedback from the stakeholder group they represent to carry forth that perspective to the committee
  • Communicate effectively with their building teachers and principal and report feedback to the committee
  • Willing to effectively mediate difficult decisions within their buildings and represent a definitive position to the committee
  • Make recommendations to the committee on behalf of the representative’s group, especially if that recommendation has to synthesize diverse views and opinions
  • Actively listen to and learn from other representatives by effectively and courteously bringing issues and concerns to the committee
  • Representatives are expected to be able to garner the support of their community for this recommendation.
 

Timeframe

Committee meetings will be held from December 2011 to April 2012 with a final recommendation to be delivered no later than the 1st of May, 2012.
 

Composition

The committee will be comprised of representatives from the following groups:
(4) Parents of current or former ELL students
(2) Community Members
(2) Elementary Teachers
(2) Secondary Teachers (Middle and High School)
(1) District Administrator
