"Reading is a basic tool in the living of a good life."
— M.J. Adler
Summer reading is a thriving part of the Bellevue School District culture. It is an important experience that keeps kids learning—and engaged in the wonderful act of reading—even when the school year is over. In addition to the joy of reading, current research points out that increased summer reading helps students maintain skills and avoid learning loss- also known as the “summer slide.” Also, summer reading does more than preserve the skills of the previous school year. By exploring a shared text, students have a common experience with their classmates to jump start the school year in September.
