Frequently Asked Questions about the 2010 AP* Institute

1.   What are the Institute dates for 2010?

The dates for 2010 are Monday, June 28 through Thursday, July 1.

2.  I want to ask about the hotels-do you have a suggestion?  Are any closer?
Most hotels are in the downtown area so that many things like shops and resturants are close to the participants.  None of the hotels are close to the high school itself which is why we offer a free shuttle service to the downtown hotels and the Day's Inn in Eastgate (which is 4 miles from downtown Bellevue).

3.  How early does the shuttle bus run?
The shuttle bus leaves at 6:30 A.M. from the hotels so that the attendees will have time for breakfast.

4.  I live far away.  May I leave early?

We start at 7:30 A.M. every day and end on the last day at 12:30 P.M.  This schedule should allow you plenty of time on Thursday to either make a flight at the airport or drive home.  If you do leave earlier than the scheduled time, you will receive fewer clock hours and you can not earn college credit.

5.  How do I earn clock hours?

You will need to pre-register on-line to earn clock hours at the time of registration.  Instructions are available on the "clock hour" button on the institute's homepage of the website.  Clock hours are free.

6.   Do I pay for college credit hours before the institute begins or at registration?
Three Seattle Pacific University (SPU) quarter credit hours are available for $210 on Monday, the first day of the Institute.  Credit hours are paid directly to SPU at registration on Monday, June 29, 2010 in the library.

7.  How can I pay?  Do I have to pay the minute I register?
You can pay by purchase order to hold your spot and then either pay at the Institute or have the district send a check later.  Otherwise, full payment is due at the time you register by check or credit card (Visa or Mastercard).  Please note you must register by June 4th or a late fee will apply.  You can not hold a spot by credit card (use the card and not have it run). Payment must be sent by mail, fax or in person-we will not register you over the phone.

8.  If I pay by check or purchase order (PO), who do I make it out to?
Please make the check or PO out to BSD API. (Bellevue School District Advanced Placement Institute)  The check or PO MUST have BSD on it.

9.  Say I can't attend for some reason-do I get my money back?
Yes, you can get a full refund if we are notified in writing by June 4th.  (If you call, you will be asked to send an email.) After June 4th, written cancellations are subject to a $50 fee for processing and handling. (You may have also prevented another participant from registering if the class is full.) If you cancel a tour after June 4th, you must pay the full tour amount.

10. May I receive a refund if I am a "no show" at the Institute?
You may only receive a refund if we are notified in writing of non-attendance before the Institute.
(See #8 above).

11.  If I have specific questions about the class or for the teacher-what can I do?
Please check out the session and presenter buttons for more information.  Most presenters have an email address or phone number available on their main page or syllabus page. If your questions are not answered after reading the syllabus or class presenter page, please email your presenter.

If you still need assistance after communicating with the presenter, please contact Kay Whelan, AP Co-Director at whelank@bsd405.org.

12.  May I sign up for more than one session?
You may not attend more than one four-day session.

13.  May I add a tour later?
Yes, on a space available basis. We usually fill the tours but also have cancellations the day of.

14.  May I check my email at the institute?
Yes, you may check your email on the computers in the library.

15.  How do I know if I am registered?
You should receive a confirmation by email five days from receipt for e-mail or fax registration and seven days for postal mail registration. If you do not receive a confirmation, please call us at 1-877-456-4399 or 425-456-4161 or e-mail us at api@bsd405.org . Please do not assume you are registered if you haven't heard anything.

16. May I drive every day to the institute?

We ask that if you are staying at a hotel that you leave your car at the hotel and take the shuttle buses.  If you are a local participant, you can drive. Parking is limited.

17.  What should I wear?

There is no dress code at the institute.  We expect you will wear casual professional attire.  If you take one of the tours, we recommend tennis shoes or hiking boots.  An umbrella or rain coat may also be advisable.

18.  What should I bring?
Please check your presenter's web page for any supplies that are needed.  Most presenters will ask that you bring copies of a lesson plan to share. Please make copies before the institute. A laptop is not required but many feel it's good to bring or some bring a flash drive or CDR.  Please bring a check if you are taking SPU credits.  Please bring a check or cash if signing up for a tour as credit cards can not be used during the institute week.
