Frequently Asked Questions about the 2010 AP* Institute

1.   What are the Institute dates for 2010?

A-The dates for 2010 are Monday, June 28 through Thursday, July 1.

2.  I want to ask about the hotels-do you have a suggestion?  Are any closer?
A-Most hotels are in the downtown area so that many things are close to the participants.  None of these are close to the high school itself which is why we offer a free shuttle service to the downtown hotels and the Day's Inn in Eastgate.

3.  How early does the shuttle bus run?
A-The shuttle bus leaves at 6:30 A.M. from the hotels as we desire attendees make it for breakfast.

4.  I live far away.  Can I leave early?

A-We start at 7:30 A.M. every day and end at 12:30 P.M. on Thursday.  This should allow you plenty of time on Thursday to either make a flight at the airport or drive home.  If you do leave earlier than the scheduled time, you will receive less clock hours and you can not have college credit.

5.  What about credit hours or clock hours?  Do I pay for that now or at the Institute?
A-SPU quarter credit hours are available for a cost on Monday, the first day of the Institute.  These are paid for separately so you can not write one check for both college credit and AP tuition.
Washington State Clock hours are free.

6.  How can I pay?  Do I have to pay the minute I register?
A-You can pay by purchase order to hold your spot and then either pay at the Institute or have the district send a check later.  Otherwise, full payment is due at the time you register by check or credit card (Visa or Mastercard).  Please note you must register by June 11 or a late fee will apply.  You can not hold a spot by credit card (use the card and not have it run). Payment must be sent by mail, fax or in person-we will not register
you over the phone.

7.  If I pay by check or purchase order, who do I make it out to?
A-Please make it out to BSD API. (Bellevue School District Advanced Placement Institute)  It MUST have BSD on it.

8.  Say I can't attend for some reason-do I get my money back?
A-Yes, you can get a full refund if we are notified in writing by June 11.  (If you call, you will be asked to send an email.) After this date, written cancellations are subject to a $50 fee for processing and handling. (You may have also prevented another participant from registering if the class is full.) If you cancel a tour after June 4, you must pay the full tour amount.

9. May I receive a refund if I am a "no show" at the Institute?
A-You can only receive a refund if we are notified in writing of non-attendance before the Institute.
(See #8 above).

10.  Say I have specific questions about the class or for the teacher-what can I do?
A-Please check out the session and presenter buttons for more information.  Most presenters have an email address or phone number available on their main page or syllabus page. If your questions are not answered after reading the syllabus or class presenter page, please email your presenter.

11.  May I sign up for more than one session?
A-You can not attend more than one four-day session.

12.  May I add a tour later?
A-Yes, on a space available basis-we usually fill these but also have cancellations the day of.

13.  May I check my email at the institute?
A-Yes, you may check your email on the computers in the library.

14.  How do I know if I am registered?
A-You should receive a confirmation from us by email five days from receipt for e-mail or faxes and seven for postal mail. If you have not received anything, please call us at 1-877-456-4399 or 425-456-4161 or e-mail us at api@bsd405.org . Please do not assume you are registered if you haven't heard anything.

15. Can I drive every day to the institute?

A-We ask that unless you are local that you leave your car at the hotel and take the shuttle buses.  Parking is limited.

16.  What should I wear?

A-There is no dress code at the institute-most people wear jeans or pants.  Temperatures are usually not "shorts" weather but fine for short sleeve shirts.  If you take one of the tours, we recommend tennis shoes or hiking boots.  And as it is Seattle, we think an umbrella or rain coat is also advisable.

17.  What should I bring?
A-Please check with your presenter's web page for any supplies that are needed.  Most will ask that you bring copies of a lesson plan to share. This you will have to do before the institute. A laptop is not required but many feel it's good to bring or something to save information on like a flash drive or CDR.  Bring a check if you are taking SPU credits.  Bring a check or cash if signing up for a tour as credit cards can not be used during the institute week.
