Kelsey Creek Home School

Kelsey Creek Home School (KCHS) is a Bellevue School District Parent Partner Program.  KCHS provides learning experiences for students that are consistent with the state's alternative learning experience requirements.

Students and their parents can design a portion of the learning experiences under the supervision of school staff and the experiences may be conducted, in part, outside of the regular classroom.

The program is designed to serve members of the home-schooling community who desire an individualized, personalized and flexible course of study with strong parent/guardian involvement but who also want to have the benefit of engaging with other parents in providing academic enrichment and developing civic responsibility.

Student Workshops are held Monday through Friday 9 am to 3:30 pm.

On Campus Supervision  Parents are required to supervise their children while they are on campus.  Students 13-18 years old may request to be on campus without a parent after a 30 day probationary period.

Who is eligible for this program?   To enroll at Kelsey Creek a family must have been home schooling their child(ren) for at least the past 90 school days.  A Declaration of Intent to Provide Home-Based Instruction should be on file in your home school district.

In-district students may enroll in the program full or part-time.  Part-time enrollment may be allowed for in-district students only if there is program capacity to accommodate them.

Out-of-district students may enroll in the program only if they participate full-time (twenty-five hours identified in the Student Learning Plan).

What are the program requirements?  Each student enrolled in the Kelsey Creek Program shall have a written student learning plan designed to meet the student's individual needs.

Each student will have direct personal contact with school staff at least weekly.  Student performance will be supervised, monitored, assessed, evaluated, and recorded by certificated program staff, as set forth in the student learning plan.

A Program Delivery Council (PDC) lead by the School Director and consisting of parents and staff develops the program's guidelines and future direction.  The PDC is also responsible for ensuring KCHS operates within the school district policies and state regulations.  PDC meetings are held monthly and everyone is welcome.

Why would parents choose this program?  Many families find the KCHS program enriches their home schooling efforts.  Parents and children build friendships, share ideas, and offer mutual encouragement.

An annual curriculum allotment per child helps parent provide books, art supplies, or other educational materials needed to fulfill Student Learning Plans.

Can KCHS students participate in Running Start?  Yes, they may register through KCHS and participate in the Running Start program during their junior and senior years.  For more information on Running Start, contact High School Programs at Bellevue Community College.

What do I need to do to enroll?  Eligible students must complete the following forms:

Out of District Students will be accepted as space allows for full-time participation and must complete:

  • Inter-district Transfer Application Form (Bellevue School District) - available at the Kelsey Creek Office
  • Inter-district Transfer Form (from your resident district.)
October '10 Enrollment : 149  Budget: $17,447   Class size: max 18

Kelsey Creek Home School Assessments:

The federal No Child Left Behind Act requires that students be assessed each year in reading and math, grades 3 through 8, plus once in high school. In Washington State, we test each spring with the WASL (Washington Assessment of Student Learning).

WASL tests are intended to assess whether students have sufficiently mastered a set of grade-level standards for a particular subject. In other words, “How many students have learned what they need to know – and can demonstrate that learning?” Some test questions are multiple-choice, but most require students to explain their answers and ask for short or extended responses. WASL scores are reported in 4 levels: “Exceeds Standard,” “Meets Standard,” “Below Standard,” and “Well Below Standard.”
