What is Mentoring?

Incoming VIBES volunteers often ask questions about mentoring.  They want to know what mentoring is, how it differs from tutoring, and if they are qualified to be a mentor.  A mentor is a caring adult who meets regularly with a student to support their learning and personal growth.  Mentors offer positive feedback and encouragement to students, giving them the confidence and skills to succeed.  Mentors often assist students with homework, so they also do some tutoring.

Strictly defined, tutoring is helping a student master a concept, complete homework, and study for tests.  Tutors focus their energy on academic achievement, but they also build a trusting relationship with students.  As a result, a student may share something personal with their tutor, and the tutor becomes a mentor as they listen and offer guidance.  Know that whether you are considerd a tutor or a mentor, you will probably end up doing a little of both with your student.

Mentoring is really just being a friend to a student.  Mentors help student make positive choices and develop successful work habits and life skills.  Making the commitment to spend one hour a week with a student qualifies you to be a mentor. Local and national statistics show that mentored students are much more likely to overcome obstacles and succeed.
