International Baccalaureate

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program at Interlake High School in the Bellevue School District is an academic curriculum for the 11th and 12th grades. To receive an IB Diploma, a student entering in the junior year commits to a two-year program that culminates in examinations. The Full Diploma program includes:
  • studying and testing in six IB subjects--Language A (English), Language B (Foreign Language), Individuals and Societies (Social Studies), Mathematics, Experimental Sciences, Sixth Subject (Music or a second IB subject from IB Curriculum above)
  • taking the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) class
  • writing an Extended Essay of 3500 to 4000 words
  • completing 150 hours of service and activities (CAS)

Students wanting IB recognition but not the Full Diploma may opt for IB Certificates for specific subjects. All IB subjects are taught and tested at two levels--High Level (HL) and Subsidiary Level (SL). For the Full Diploma, students must study and test in three subjects at High Level and three at Subsidiary Level. Certificate Candidates may study and test at either level.

Tests for both Diploma and Certificate Candidates occur in May every year, with most students testing at the end of the senior year. High Level (HL) tests follow two years of study in-depth, Subsidiary Level (SL) tests may come after one year of study, covering less material and with a broader scope.

For the Diploma student, the Extended Essay must be registered with the International Baccalaureate Examinations Office (Wales) by January 15 of the senior year.

"I think the IB approach demanding total essay responses not only inspires thought, but gives the teacher a chance to go deep in some subjects. You're not so worried you have to cover the entire universe so a kid can answer all the multiple-choice questions."
