The board approved the award of contract for Enatai to Spee West Construction. Spee West was the lowest responsible bidder and has been the contractor for several other BSD building projects including Sammamish, Chinook, Newport Heights and Tyee.


The board heard a presentation on the district’s bilingual instructional program by Heidi LaMare, ELL Supervisor, and Nicole Shimizu, ELL Facilitator. The district has 2,223 students who receive ELL services who speak 82 different languages. An overview of the program including funding, services and programs offered and data on student performance on various assessments.


Spiritridge staff presented an overview of the school, including bright spots, a summary of learning, the school’s focus, as well as progress on assessments. Principal Alexa Allman highlighted that awards the school has received have been awarding student growth. One of the programs that the Spiritridge team shared about the school-wide focuses on Social Emotional Learning, STEM, equity, and positive behavior support.


Representatives from the Bellevue Schools Foundation presented an overview and update on the foundation and its partnership with the BSD including the Spring for Schools luncheon, STEM initiative and classroom grants.


Equity and Graduation Success Director Shomari Jones presented an update on graduation rates in the district. The district’s goal is that by 2018 each and every student will graduate. The district must continually examine the challenges and barriers, remove them, and give multiple pathways to success. This includes researching, developing, and monitoring programs to help students reach graduation. Some of the highlighted options were the role of progress monitors, running start, and credit recovery options.
